Jakkalsvlei, which translates to “Jackal’s Marsh,” is a family-owned winery gracefully nestled within the world-renowned Garden Route. The estate has been under the ownership of the Jonker family since 1972, and it is now proudly managed by the third generation.
The winery’s name is derived from the numerous foxes, jackals, and wildcats that roam the surrounding Langeberg Mountains. Nelis Jonker, inspired by the remarkable natural beauty of the area during his hunting expeditions, was moved to acquire this distinctive piece of land. In 1987, Nelis’ son, Andrew Jonker, made the significant decision to plant the first vineyard of Chenin Blanc.
It was Jantjie Jonker, Nelis’ grandson, who went on to establish the Jakkalsvlei wine label in 2008, initially launching with the Mount Cuvée and Hanepoot varieties. Since opening its doors to the public in January 2010, Jakkalsvlei has experienced steady growth and expansion, culminating in the introduction of a premium wine collection to commemorate a decade of outstanding winemaking. The limited-edition Lord Jackal range stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to quality and craftsmanship.
Jakkalsvlei’s distinctive location within the breathtaking Garden Route contributes unique characteristics to their wines. The fertile soils and abundant water resources in the valley, combined with the expertise of their dedicated winemaking team, result in the production of exceptional wines. The winery offers a selection of wines suitable for any occasion, designed to elevate and create memorable experiences, with glasses raised in celebration. At Jakkalsvlei they believe, life is meant to be celebrated.
